Satan's Worst Nightmare, Part 3

by Gary Blanchard

Find out what makes the devil run scared

My wife is deathly afraid of spiders! I am, too, but being “the man” of the house, I can’t admit it. One day we were out walking and saw a humongous wolf spider right in front of us. My wife screamed and commanded me to kill it. If there is one thing I have learned after 18 years of marriage, it’s to do what my wife says—as long as it’s not illegal—so I squashed it! What we both didn’t realize was that the spider was pregnant! She looked bloated because she was filled with hundreds of baby spiders! They all came out of her squashed body and spread out on the road. My wife ran away in terror, and I followed close behind (not too close ’cause that’s not what manly actor John Wayne would do).

Did you know the devil has arachnophobia? Yes, in a way he, too, is scared of spiders. Let me explain. The Bible says that after Jesus Christ died on the cross the Holy Spirit was given to those who have faith in Him (Galatians 3:13, 14). In other words, the death of Jesus gave you and I the right to be Spirit-filled. Now the devil doesn’t have to deal with just Jesus (mother spider), he has to deal with Jesus living in each and every one of us (baby spiders)! No wonder Ellen White says the following: “There is nothing that Satan fears so much as that the people of God shall clear the way by removing every hindrance, so that the Lord can pour out His Spirit upon a languishing church and an impenitent congregation. . . . When the way is prepared for the Spirit of God, the blessing will come.”1

What is it about the Holy Spirit living in us that terrifies Satan? When you and I are filled with the Holy Spirit, three dynamic things happen in and through us! These three things cause the devil to wake up in a cold sweat and run like a sissy!

First, we get the Atmosphere of Jesus. Interestingly, the Holy Spirit is actually called the “Spirit of Jesus” (Acts 16:7, Philippians 1:19). This is why, without having to tell others, they almost immediately know you are a Christian! The Holy Spirit communicates to them that you are enveloped in the atmosphere of Christ. The Bible also says that, in a spiritual sense, you smell like Jesus (2 Corinthians 2:15). So don’t be surprised if people apologize for swearing around you, or for watching programs or listening to music that is clearly offensive to God. Also don’t be surprised if they seek you out for spiritual guidance or even persecute you!

Second, we get the Abilities of Jesus. Ever heard of spiritual gifts? These are the actual abilities of Jesus given to you through the Holy Spirit. In fact, in 1 Corinthians 12:7 they are called the “manifestation of the Spirit.” Some Bible scholars believe there are over 26 different spiritual gifts mentioned in the Bible. For example, leadership, prayer, healing, evangelism, preaching, carpentry, teaching, faith, and the list goes on. So what are we supposed to do with these abilities of Jesus? The Bible tells us clearly in 1 Peter 4:10, “God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another” (NLT).When you see your pastor this Sabbath, ask him to help you identify your spiritual gifts and show you how you can be a minister for the Master in your local church and community.

Third, we get the Attributes of Jesus. “Don’t look at me, look at Jesus” is a phrase I hear repeated by many Christians, but it’s wrong . . . very wrong! The truth is, we are the body of Christ, and the world will never know what Christ is like unless His attributes or attitude is reflected in us! In Galatians 5:22, 23 we are told that the Holy Spirit will give us the “love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (NIV)of Jesus. It’s true, you might be the only Bible your friends and family ever read! In fact, the apostle Paul put it this way: “Clearly, you are a letter from Christ showing the result of our ministry among you. This ‘letter’ is written not with pen and ink, but with the Spirit of the living God. It is carved not on tablets of stone, but on human hearts” (2 Corinthians 3:3, NLT). So let your light shine; be a representative of Christ!

When I squished that spider, my wife and I had no idea how its death would actually cause many more spiders to spread out into the world. In the same way, when Satan orchestrated the death of Christ, I doubt he realized the heaven he was going to unleash into his hell. Now, through the death of Christ, you and I receive the Holy Spirit and cause the devil nightmares as we display the atmosphere, abilities, and attributes of Jesus wherever we are.

Don’t miss next week when we’ll learn how to be filled daily with the Holy Spirit!
