The 24/50 Project

by Alyssa Blackmer

Mission impossible: no way could we raise $1,500 in 24 hours!

Our ninth grade/tenth grade class was doing a project three days before school was out for the summer. Our teacher had made a poster and everything else for this project. He called it the 24/50 Project. We had 24 hours and $50 to change the world.

In my group of four, one girl suggested that we should donate to the Maranatha one-day church program. A donation of $1,500 pays for a galvanized steel framework with a vented roof that can be put up in one day. (Then church members finish the walls and floor with materials available locally.) I immediately thought, We can’t raise that much money in just 24 hours! Another person in our group said exactly what I was thinking, but somehow we ended up doing that project anyway.

God started helping us do the impossible! I raised about $250 that night. The other three group members raised enough so that by the next morning we had about $980. By the end of lunchtime we had $1,000.

With just one hour before the deadline, we were still $500 short. We prayed and prayed about it. Five minutes later, our teacher talked on the phone to a woman who had a question about our project. When we heard him say “Thank you so much! That’s so generous!” all eyes focused on him. We had received $200 from that one woman!

We remained nervous though, because we were still $300 short of our goal. A little while later, our teacher came over to our group again and said, “Congratulations! You just built a church!” We all stared at him, waiting for an explanation. He said that one last person had been so anxious for our project to succeed that he decided to give us the whole final $300 that we needed.

By the very end of the 24 hours, the four people in our group had raised $1,585! It was awesome to have God accomplish that through us. I learned a very important lesson that day: don’t ever doubt God. He can do everything and anything! And as the apostle Paul said, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).
