Biblical laws we ignore?

Posted by Vianna Dublin on Jun 7 2009 7:45AM

In the bible Lord speaks about clean and unclean meats. We as seventh-day Adventists follow this thoroughly. However, right after this chapter there are laws concerning sexual issues, leprosy and uncleanliness. Why is it that these are not held in the same light as the chapters concerning clean and unclean meats? Confused and unsure.

Thank you for all your responses. I know I'm quite late in replying. What i was refering to was Leviticus 12,13, 14, and 15 where they speak about a woman who has just given childbirth is unclean, in 13 they speak about a person who has been healed from an infectious disease being unclean, 14 speaks about skin diseases and 15 about a man who has had a discharge and a woman who is seeing her monthy period being unclean. No one really understood my question. What I was trying to ask was if in Leviticus 13 the issue of clean and unclean meats is taken as something serious then why is it that the chapters afterwards are taken so lightly? For example a woman seeing her monthlies in this present day touches alot of things and sits on seats and people even have sex while they are seeing their period.

I personally think that the issue of sexual purity in lieu of vegetarianism (I'm not saying that not eating meat is wrong) has been put on the back burner in the church, and it because of that, the young people in the church are being crippled with the world's view of sex. Another reason could be that some may think that the whole sex issue is clear, while the eating unclean and clean foods topic is not clear and needs more insight. Let me know what you think. Have a happy Sabbath!

This is an excellent question. From what I know, the biblical laws governing sexual practices still stand and have not changed. Ephesians 5:3, Hebrews 13:4, and Revelation 21:8 give evidence that those forbidden sexual practices are evil, and those who partake of it will not enter into God's kingdom. Romans 1 gives an thorough outline of what happens when people reject God and His truths. The result is homosexuality, which is a sin. Adultery is a sin. Insect is a sin. Those laws in Leviticus on those forbidden practices are there for a reason. They have not changed at all. It's just that in these days, people are becoming increasingly scared to say the truth, and accept lies as truth. Don't be fooled.

Well Vianna, these most of these laws to my understanding were made to to protect the children of Israel while they were in the desert. For example:The eating of clean and unclean meats were established after the flood as there was no vegetation on the land so the original eating habits of humans had to be altered.Scientists today have proven that we are made to eat plants not animals.Other original laws and normalcies had to be altered after sin.

To Adrian: I got a little lost in your explanation. I used to be a meat-eater. I grew up knowing that if it's clean in terms of what the Bible says, then it's fine. I stopped eating meat when I was shown a video during my church's health day that showed the atrocities of the meat industry. Alot of horrendous things go behind the scenes to get that chicken on one's plate. Just wondering, could you help me understand what you were saying? Thanks! Happy Sabbath!

(continued)... As for following the instructions concerning visiting a priest, offering sacrifices, etc., I think it goes without saying that these parts were linked with the sanctuary and ceremonial law and were done away with at the cross (see Colossians 2:11-23 and Romans 14). The principles that were the reason for God giving these instructions to Israel are still followed by the SDA church today.

I'm assuming you're referring to Leviticus chapters 11-15. My answer would be that the SDA church does not teach that we should follow what's taught concerning clean and unclean meat in chapter 11, but goes beyond that and says that it's best to abstain from all meat, and ideally even from dairy products and eggs. As far as our practices concerning meat are concerned, they are just one part of our comprehensive health message, which also covers (among other things) plenty of water, exercise, sunshine, fresh fruits and vegetables, temperance and regularity in meals, abstinence from alcohol, tobacco, and any harmful drugs, sanitation (bathing and washing regularly), etc. Our health message actually covers the laws in Leviticus about uncleanliness, leprosy (not very common today), and sexual issues, since these are all just different areas of sanitation, something our society today (in the U.S.) is careful about in general

We dont have a natural desire to eat Pork or any other meat for that matter. However Hormones and general nature urges us towards procreation. When we are not sure of ourselves or positive what we believe or understand it becomes easier to fall short of what we are expected and instructed to do.

Continuing...culturally speaking there are certain things that are just now illegal for us to do (even if we wanted to). Within the laws it states that if a woman committed adultery she is to be stoned. The justice system in place then enabled that law, but now it doesn't. If we were to do that now, not only would we be imprisoned for it, but it would not be an effective witness of Christ in this society. The Bible is to be our guide at all times, but we are also to recognize that there are some instructions that are specific to a time and place. Hope this helps.
