William Shakespeare wrote some pretty good plays, even though he never went to college. But that was 400 years ago, when nobody asked to see your r‚sum‚ before they hired you.
What if Shakespeare were alive today? First, he'd definitely want to get rid of that stiff collar and find himself some comfortable jeans. And he'd probably want to improve his productivity by learning to use a computer, send e-mail, and diagram sentences. That's why he'd need to find a good college.
I think he'd choose Newbold College.

And he'd probably want to improve his productivity by learning to use a computer, send e-mail, and diagram sentences. That's why he'd need to find a good college.
I think he'd choose Newbold College.
First of all, Newbold is in his native England, so Shakespeare would feel right at home in Newbold's rural location, among the thatched cottages, ancient churches, and green fields. And whenever he needed more thrills, he could run out and catch a bus or train to reach London in an hour. There he'd have loads of fun seeing his favorite sites and discovering new ones. Examples: Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Harrod's department store, the Tower of London, Big Ben, the British Museum, and Trafalgar Square.
And you might remember from his plays (such as Romeo and Juliet) that Shakespeare was really into romance. His favorite spot at Newbold College would be the gorgeous landscaped garden outside the women's dorm. The flowers and greenery make a perfect backdrop when Newbold drama students present outdoor performances of A Midsummer Night's Dream and other classic plays.
As an aspiring playwright, Shakespeare would be attracted by Newbold's outstanding humanities courses. Maybe he'd join the college's English/history society to experience lectures, discussion groups, and trips to literary sites all over England (including his own birthplace).
I think different cultures must have fascinated Shakespeare, because many of his plays are set outside England in places such as Italy, Greece, and Denmark. At Newbold he could research all of these countries and more without leaving campus. With students from 55 countries, this school feels like a giant international studies class. Students can find British culture, African dress, American history, Eastern European dances, West Indian food, and countless languages.
Why not go to England for some of your general classes? You can spend a year or two picking up your basic courses at Newbold, then go back to your home college to concentrate on your major. North Americans won't have any problem transferring the credits, because transcripts for general students are issued by Andrews University in the United States.
Or consider getting your entire degree from Newbold. Courses include biblical and pastoral studies, humanities, behavioural science, and business administration. Literature classes allow you to visit Victorian London. After studying about Renaissance paintings in your fine arts class, you can see them for yourself in London's famous galleries. Your business classes emphasize the international skills you'll need to succeed in the growing European community.
Campus activities include the African club, Caribbean Society, Cricket Club, Drama Club, Ministerial Association, and Radio Club. The college choir has performed in Europe and Egypt. And you'll never forget Newbold's weekly worship services, when multiple languages join in prayer, singing, mission reports, and sharing.
As for the food, just imagine that you're eating at a miniature United Nations every day. You might have Italian pasta, English trifles, or Scandinavian rice pudding. Or perhaps African rice and peas, Indian samosas, or Thai stir-fry.
Some students told me that the most memorable part of their stay at Newbold was the travel. So save plenty of time to explore Windsor Castle, Oxford, Stonehenge, the Lake District, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and Stratford. With $600 you can buy a one-month Eurorail Pass, your ticket to everything from Stockholm and Helsinki to Rome and Athens. Last year the choir visited Scandinavia!
North American students sometimes feel intimidated by the thought of going to school overseas. Actually it's not as complicated as you think, and the Newbold admissions staff is trained to answer questions for confused international students. (Yes, you'll need a passport. No, you can't buy things with American dollars. Yes, everyone drives on the left side of the road.)
The price shouldn't scare you either. You can pay a year's tuition at Newbold, buy a round-trip plane ticket to England, and travel around Europe for about the same price as a year of college in North America.
