One of the most perfect weeks of my life happened in Austria. A few years ago in April I visited the Seventh-day Adventist campus of Bogenhofen.
Two friendly girls met me, invited me to stay in their dorm room, and gave me a tour of the beautiful school. One of them took a picture of me standing outside a fifteenth-century castle on campus.
After breakfast the next morning I hopped on a train and ended up in nearby Salzburg, one of Europe's most picture-perfect cities. In 10 hours I stared at a dozen breathtaking cathedrals, toured Mozart's birthplace, listened to an outdoor violin concert, explored an ancient fortress, lunched at a sidewalk Italian caf‚, visited the surrounding villages, explored an old graveyard, and marched down the aisle of the church where Maria got married in The Sound of Music. Finally I ate a piece of warm apple strudel and decided that Austrians must be the happiest people on earth.
After I got back to Bogenhofen that night, my friends told me about world-class skiing, trips to Munich and Berlin, operas in Vienna, and other experiences they'd enjoyed since arriving in Europe. "People who miss out on this are crazy," one of them told me.

Although my friends were Americans, they spoke fluent German. They had come to Bogenhofen through Adventist Colleges Abroad (ACA), an organization that provides North American students with a chance to study in 10 different countries on four continents.
Would you like to polish a second language while seeing the world and earning college credit? As an ACA student you'll spend one year or one summer overseas immersing yourself in the language and customs of your host country. Most schools also allow you to take courses in literature, history, religion, fine arts, or business.
The total cost of ACA plus your airfare will be about the same as a year at your Adventist college in North America. Since you enroll through your home campus, you're still eligible for most kinds of financial aid. The cost also includes local field trips and tours to places like Paris, Machu Picchu, C“te d'Azur, or Nairobi.
The following four schools offer both full-year and summer programs for international students:
Collonges, France (French)
Ski the slopes of Mont Blanc, Europe's highest peak. Take a moonlit boat ride on the Seine. Climb the Eiffel Tower, and discover treasures at the Louvre. Vacation on the French Riviera. Live on the Collonges campus with a magnificent view of Lake Geneva. From your dorm room you can walk into Switzerland, buy some Swiss chocolate or a watch, and return to your own bed by evening.
Sagunto, Spain (Spanish)
Listen to the unforgettable rhythm of Spanish music as you stroll the streets of a Mediterranean village. Bask in year-round perfect weather. Soak up the warmth, hospitality, and joy of the Spanish people. Learn one of the world's most important languages from native speakers. Visit historical sites in Madrid, Barcelona, and Zaragoza. You can even find the remains of a Roman fortress just two miles from campus.
Bogenhofen, Austria (German)
Backpack through the gorgeous scenery of Austria's Alps. Visit the homes of the world's greatest composers in Vienna. Ski down some incredible slopes near Innsbruck and Kitzbuhel, or watch World Cup athletes in competition. If you love The Sound of Music, you can travel 35 miles to Salzburg to find the white gazebo, the Von Trapp mansion, and nearly every other scene pictured in the movie.
Experience the heart of the renaissance and visit some of the greatestartistic and architectural treasures in the world. Explore ancientruins in Rome or experience the majestic grandeur of Venice. Thewonders of Florence are only a 20 minute bus ride form the campus, whichwas itself once a renasisance villa.
In addition to these three main programs, you can also spend a year at the following schools:
Universidad del Plata, Argentina (Spanish)
Experience Hispanic American culture and visit Peru and Brazil while attending one of the world's oldest and largest Adventist colleges.
And that's not all. ACA also offers summer programs in Athens (BiblicalGreek), Brazil (Portuguese), Hong Kong (Mandarin Chinese), and Ukraine(Russian). Call ACA to find out more.
By the way, you don't have to be a college student to enroll. Thesummer programs in Austria, Brazil, France, Italy and Spain acceptqualified high school students.
How do you join this fantastic program? Call the ACA office in Maryland (301-680-6444) or talk to one of the ACA contact people on any North American Adventist college campus.
Most of the programs require you to have intermediate competence in the language before you go overseas (your time will be more profitable if you already know how to ask where the bathroom is). Start studying now, and you'll soon be ready for an adventure.
