What do you look for when you choose a college?

Someone surveyed a bunch of high school students with that question. Maybe you can guess their answers: challenging academics, small classes, caring professors, good facilities, affordable cost, and so on.

But which factor topped the list? Location.

And the funny thing is that everyone interprets this differently. Some students want to stay right near home so they don't have to leave their boyfriend, their pet turtle, or their mom's refrigerator.

But maybe you're one of those adventurers with a different goal: getting away from home. And I'm here to help you get as far away as possible.

Find a globe and point to your home, which will be somewhere in North America for most Insight readers. Now hold your finger there and turn to the opposite side of the globe. Somewhere nearby you'll find our next college destination: Australia.

Ready to explore? Just inland from Australia's eastern coast lies Avondale College, the only Seventh-day Adventist college on the continent. You can find Avondale's location on a map by locating Sydney and then looking about 100 miles north for a town named Cooranbong. (If it's not there, find a better map. If it's still not there, add it to the map yourself.)

Some people describe the Avondale area as a big park. Hills on one side of the campus challenge campers and rock climbers. A lake in the other direction allows sailing, waterskiing, and canoeing. As for the climate and position on the continent, Avondale parallels South Carolina in the U.S.

And you don't have to go to the zoo to view exotic wildlife. At Avondale you can just stroll across campus for a glimpse of Australia's marsupial possum. Kangaroos, wombats, dingoes, and even camels inhabit this fascinating country.

And how would you like to try crocodile hunting? No?

Well, that's OK, because most Avondale students haven't tried it either. They're too busy swimming, surfing, and soaking up the sun at the beautiful ocean beaches located less than 30 minutes from campus.

Thirty minutes in another direction lands them in the mountains. A little more than an hour takes them to Sydney, Australia's largest city. There they enjoy the Sydney Opera House, shopping, sports, and a vast spectrum of restaurants serving specialties from around the world.

Each year Avondale becomes home to students from 25 countries. You can stay there for your entire college career or try it for just a year. They welcome international students, and the credits you earn can be applied to your degree in the U.S., Canada, or other countries.

You can take classes in theology, business, elementary and secondary education, biology, chemistry, math, English, geography, visual arts, nursing, and more. Or maybe you'd like to enroll for their exciting aviation program. Avondale is well respected in Australia, and job placement for business, nursing, and theology graduates nears 100 percent.

What will it cost you? That depends partly on the exchange rate, but your round-trip airfare, tuition, room, board, and travel within Australia will probably cost about the same as a year at a North American college.

And here's a super deal: a Circle Pacific plane ticket lets you fly a circular route around the ocean for not much more than a regular round-trip ticket. For example, you could start by flying from Los Angeles to Honolulu to Auckland, New Zealand, to Sydney. Then on your return trip, you could go north through Hong Kong and Tokyo before going back to North America.

Or you could linger in Australia for a month or two before heading home. Don't miss your chance to see the Great Barrier Reef, Ayers Rock, Melbourne, Canberra, Perth, and one of the world's last frontiers--the Australian outback.

And remember that the seasons down under are opposite those of the Northern Hemisphere. To contact Avondale:
