College Guide

Becky Lane Scoggins

Several years ago Becky Lane arrived at Insight magazine as an intern. One of her assignments was to write creative and helpful guides to each of the Adventist colleges. We here at Insight think Becky did such a great job on her college guide that we've recently updated it, and are including it on our Web site. But who exactly is Becky (Lane) Scoggins and why is she eating a peanut butter sandwich on national TV? Keep reading to get the answers to these and other questions.

Did you visit every college you profiled? I wish! Can you imagine Insight giving me a travel budget for Austria and Australia? I had been to about half the colleges, but I felt as if I'd visited all of them by the time all the interviews were done. I talked with lots of current and former students of the colleges, and most schools supplied me with photos and recruiting brochures that gave me a feel for the atmosphere.

How long did you work for Insight? Off and on for a year while I was at the Review and Herald. I worked as an intern for all of the magazines while I was there.

Where did you go to college? Union College and University of Nebraska in Lincoln. I also went to Johns Hopkins University in Maryland for my masters degree.

Have you always wanted to be a writer? It was the first thing I wanted to be when I was little. I wrote a book called Poams when I was 9, but after that I wanted to be a teacher, a hockey player, a museum curator, a lawyer, or a farmer.

How did you meet your husband, Jeff? Jeffs a missionary kid from Tennessee, and Im a farm kid from Minnesota, but we both ended up at Union College in Nebraska. We got to know each other in Rhetoric and Persuasion class when the professor assigned us to the same debate team. We were supposed to prove that socialized medicine doesnt work. We won the debate but then I went to Poland and Russia as a student missionary and we didnt get married for another five years.

Who is the most famous person youve ever met? Ive seen famous athletes, politicians, and musicians, but I havent met any of them in person. I knew a man who knew the pope, if that counts. I was seen on the Today show with Katie Couric last year, but it was for only three seconds and, I was eating a peanut butter sandwich instead of waving at the camera.

What Bible character do you most relate to? I most identify with the father of the boy with the evil spirit: "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!" (Mark 9:24). I also identify with Judas, who admired Jesus but wasnt quite ready to follow him anywhere.

What are you up to now? I work for myself editing books for mostly religious clients. I also write essays and stories on the side.
