They're Watching You

February 9, 2010

Yesterday I spoke with a close friend. He's in graduate school working on a Ph.D. (Can you say, uh, work?!!!) Graduate school is no walk in the park, and he has definitely had his share of ups and downs, but God sends Him little "notes" that  his life's work is much more than what he's studying.

During our conversation, he told me about something his older sister said to him last week.

"I'm going to get baptized and join your church," she told him. He was momentarily speechless, as you might imagine.

"Through the years I've watched you and the kind of life you've lived. I've gone to your church, read some of your literature, and met your friends. I've seen what you guys do, what you're into. I know that your church is the church for me."

This might not seem like a big deal, but when you consider that my friend grew up in a home where God was virtually non-existent, his sister's statement is quite startling. He didn't know, but she had been quietly searching for God. She knew something was missing from her life.

My friend couldn't believe his ears. It's one thing for friends to watch you and be drawn to God, but family is always tougher to lead to Christ. Notice, he didn't get preachy with his sister; He simply invited her into his life and that was enough to leave her wanting more.

Your life matters. How you live your life matters even more. Whether you know it or not, people are looking for Jesus in you. Some of them are closer to you than you know!

Check out 1 Peter 3:15.
