Absolutely Amazing Fireworks

July 15, 2008

I hope everybody had a good Fourth of July weekend! Did you catch any fireworks? I did in Augusta, Georgia. The display was great—lots of color and lots of noise above the Savannah River!

A few times this weekend I thought about our forefathers, those old guys who signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776, as they were officially breaking away from England. Independence—what do you think of when you think of that word?

I remember praying when I was a kid, “Jesus, please don’t come until I . . . graduate from high school.” Then when it looked like the world was gonna last long enough for me to graduate from high school, I prayed, “Jesus, please don’t come until I . . . get married.” Well, now I’ve that done that too. What do I look forward to now? Independence Day, but not the Fourth of July.

Just so you know, being an adult has its pros and cons, just like being a teen does. The Independence Day I’m looking forward to doesn’t have to do with being an adult. Yeah, I have more freedom these days. I can go wherever I want and stay out as late as I want, if that’s what you think independence is. I also have a mortgage to pay, and I have to buy everything for myself—clothes, gas, car insurance, and food. Independence is expensive and getting more so all the time! So enjoy the things your parents take care of (pay) for you!

I’m looking forward to an Independence Day that I don’t have a date for—I’m looking forward to Jesus’ return (Matthew 24). Are you?

I used to have nightmares about Jesus coming in the clouds and not being ready for Him to come. I’ve gotten over my fear as Pastor Steve (you can read his column in Insight or here on our Web site) has explained many times that salvation is simply spelled out in 1 John 5:13:  If you believe in Jesus, God’s Son, you have eternal life, period.

Can you imagine what the fireworks are gonna be like when Jesus bursts through the clouds? Absolutely amazing!

Bring ’em on, Jesus, and the sooner the better!
