My Interview with the Rock Stars

December 15, 2006

“So there’s a concert at my church on Dec. 9. Wanna come?”

Since becoming friends with my co-worker [at the hospital], Malia, I had been waiting for an invitation like this. She was one of my favorite co-workers and I was grateful for the chance to get to know her better.

“I don’t know if you’ve heard of the people playing," she continued. "But we’re friends with a few of them…”

Malia had already told me about her church and I was planning on accepting before she finished. As she kept talking, though, I felt my mouth opening in surprise.

Had I heard of them? The names she was casually dropping were huge! Sara Groves, who would be headlining the concert had just won “Album of the Year” by CCM magazine (the Billboard of the Christian music world). Not only had I heard of them, I had an unhealthy obsession with downloading their music! They were the reason I had to start giving myself limits in the iTunes store!

“Are you kidding me? I’m totally there!,” I squealed, hopping around the nurses station.

It wasn't until a few days later that I realized I should probably be doing more than just attending the concert. I am a Christian writer, after all.

“Malia, do you think that any of the artists would be willing to do an interview with me for the magazine?,” I asked.

“I don’t see why not,” she said. Scrawling the number of the director of Capernaum, the ministry the artists were performing for, she handed me a piece of paper. “Chris Williams and Allen Levi are both really cool."
