There Should Be a Rule

February 26, 2006

Every now and then I get frustrated with life. Like when I get cut off driving down I-95 and almost get into an accident. Or when someone’s snide comment to me keeps me feeling self-critical and depressed for days. There are also just those situations that make me feel too young, too stupid, or too inexperienced.

Well, I decided that there should be a few more rules to life and since I have the auspicious power to write and post these things, here are my additions:

1. There’s no negative commenting about other people’s life situation (including school, work, or extracurricular activities), even if you have been where they have been and done better.

2. Rewards in life should be given based on how much effort you’ve given, not whether you succeeded or failed.

3. Prodding of information from a person for the purpose of future manipulation is prohibited.

4. Allotment of second chances is mandatory.

There is, of course, a lot more that I could say, but I’ll stop here for now. You’re probably already check-marking which rules you wish you could apply to umm… certain people in your life. Well, as I was less than happily writing this blog, it occurred to me that I’ve heard these rules, or some sort of variation, somewhere before.

1. “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Matthew 7:1-2

2. “Man looks at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart.” 1 Sam. 16:7

3. “The wicked draw the sword and bend the bow to bring down the poor and needy, to slay those whose ways are upright. But their swords will pierce their own hearts, and their bows will be broken.” Psalm 37:14-15

4. “Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy times seven.” Matthew 18:21 “Though a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again.” Prov. 24:16

I guess I can very nicely sum up my frustrations with, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27

Does life need a few more rules for you too? Go ahead and leave me a comment! I’d love to know!
